a couple of extra dollars, and they're doing it for economic reasons. gang members are different. they use drugs as a means to facilitate the gang activities be it purchase weapons, enforce their authority on the neighborhoods, terrorize citizens - they're more prone to use violence against any person and particularly against the police, so that's why when we have warrants that are dealing with gang members and dealing with narcotics, we use the special response team because they're the professionals at this, and that's what we want to do. (vo)srt's job is done. an extensive search of the building initially unearths a pile of cash, followed by a significant quantity of cocaine and crack. and finally, detectives find a frightening array of guns and ammunition, including a .44 magnum and an ak47 assault rifle - an extremely deadly weapon of war.

the suspect was later charged with armed drug trafficking and possession of cocaine with intent to sell. every year three quarters of srt's raids are drug warrants. it puts them on the frontline in the fight against the drug trade. lieutenant calvin james doesn't see that about to change. >>i've never heard of a shortage of crack, there being a shortage of cocaine, there being a shortage of marijuana or pills or anything that they want on the street, so that leads me to think that you know, the supply is pretty good, and they're getting in what they want to get in. but because our narcotics guys are going out, they're finding these places where the sales are being made from, they're getting search warrants, yeah, all i can say is there's no shortage of business for us. we're constantly working.

>> bill: yeah if brad pitt made it has got be good. yes indeed. we started with this yesterday, but now more talk about the fill bust, and i know a lot of you weren't happy with the fact they found something good to say about rand paul which is not -- not praising in any way or identifying in any way or giving him a pass in any way on all of the other crazy things he has said in his life including that he said he wasn't sure he would have voted for the 1965 civil rights act, but on this issue, two things where i think he did the right thing. number one he did a real filibuster. he really got up and talked for as long as his lungs and bladder held out. he didn't just threaten to filibuster and then go off to

his office and watch television he talked for 12 hours and 52 minutes, and he raised serious questions about a very serious issue about when the united states feels that we have the legal and the moral authority to use drones as killing machines either against our enemies, those plotting against us where in the world, when in the world, and whom can we attack, and the other question do we have the legal and the moral authority to use drones to kill american citizens overseas or hear on american soil? and he -- remember he started that filibuster a day -- he filibustered this issue and the confirmation of john brennan as an excia director a day after he got a letter from eric holder attorney general who stated that yes the united states had the legal authority -- this is what

he said -- the legal authority under some circumstances in emergencies to be sure -- we had the legal authority to kill american citizens with drones on american soil. that's what holder said at the beginning of the week and what triggered the filibuster on rand paul. he got a lot of praise and got an answer from eric holder on that question. do you really mean that americans could be targeted by their own government with a drone in the united states? after the filibuster eric holder wrote rand paul a very brief letter yesterday clearing it up. here is jay carney leading that letter. >> quote, does the president have the authority to use a weaponized drone to kill an american not engaged in combat on american soil? the answer is no.

>> bill: boom. at least we got the answer. and by the way the answer is exact opposite of what eric holder intimated, at least in his first letter to rand paul at the beginning of the week. so good job by rand paul. and he raised the issue and got americans talking about drones. even president obama said these are very serious questions. we have to develop some real guidelines on drones and he said they are going to do it within the next few months. it seems like we should have had the guidelines before we started killing people with drones but i hate to get picky about it. but again, rand paul got praise from a lot of quarters among others from harry reid. >> i have learned from my experiences with talk filibusters is this. to succeed you need strong

convictions, but also a strong bladder. it's obvious that paul has both. [ laughter ] >> bill: strong convictions and a strong bladder to go along. but if harry reid and i paraded rand paul, not everybody did. john mccain and lindsey graham attacked him yesterday on the floor of the senate and accused him of being way out of line. and the more i heard john mccain yesterday the more i said rand paul good job. here is john mccain who dares make this statement on the floor of the senate. >> well, mr. president, i watched some of that -- quote, debate unquote yesterday. i saw colleagues of mine who

know better come to the floor and voice this same concern which is totally unfounded. >> bill: so condescending. rand paul got the spot light yesterday and john mccain couldn't stand it and of course his little butt boy lindsey graham because john mccain is upset then lindsey is upset too. oh, yeah and the go ahead that john mccain -- in fact -- went on actually to call at it disservice to raise this issue. >> so we have done i think a disservice to a lot of americans by make them believe that somehow they are in danger from their government. they are not. >> by the way, what have republicans done for the past five or six years? making their terrified that the

government is going to take your guns. everyone wants to take over your lives. >> bill: yeah, that's all they do is the scare tactic and rand paul was responding to later from the attorney general of the united states who said we have the legal authority to kill americans on american soil with a drone. jesus, that's worth raising the question about it. and it was john mccain and lindsey graham, what service do they provide by raising the big issue of benghazi and accusing president obama for being responsible for the death of ambassador stephens when the congress had cut the funding. so they made a huge phony deal about ben gau -- benghazi in fact they still are. and when rand paul raises a

serious issue -- by the way those issues are not disappeared where is our privacy when you may soon a police department drone circling over your backyard every day? these are serious issues this rand paul raised with the full buster. i repeat. good for rand paul for doing the filibuster, and even more good for rand paul for pissing off john mccain and lindsey graham. how about you, 866-55-press. we should all thank rand paul. if you believe in civil liberties and the constitution of the united states then thank rand paul for the issues that he raised on the floor. for that issue, he's right on.

against countries, killing people right and left it's all in secret so we don't really know how many people we have killed, but journalists estimate about 3,000, of whom maybe 800 are innocent civilians just killed in a cross fire. just a couple of days ago, there were kids who were walking their goats and they mistook them for respects or something, and blew them both away. you know -- you don't think that has a blow back? and then you expand that to this administration has said we even have the right to kill american citizens on foreign soil, and then eric holder says we have the right to kill american citizens on american soil. i didn't say that eric holder said that. now yesterday he said no we don't, but these are very

serious issues. and add to that that we're starting now to see drones come into this country by -- by police departments, universities, all kinds of government agencies. they are already given away hundreds of permits for drones. do you really want your police department to have a drone circling over your backyard every freaking day of the year? >> and the issue goes far beyond barack obama being president. john mccain we can trust the american government, but richard nixon tried -- plotted to try to kill a reporter. i mean they have these kinds of corrupt presidents that get in there and take their power way, way, way farther than it needs to go. >> bill: yeah, i trust barack

obama, but i wouldn't trust her herman cain or dick cheney. elaine is calling from washington, d.c. >> caller: hi, bill, how are you today? >> bill: i'm good. i'm a little worked up here. >> caller: i'm not going to pull my hair out like the previous callers, but bill, this is one of the few times i have to disagree with you. too many of us right now are a falling into the republican trap of paranoia and hysteria and we need to take off our tinfoil hats for a minute, because when you look back and really put it in context -- when you look back, i watched the -- the hearing yesterday with ted cruz and eric holder and ted cruz put this up hypothetical situation. he said are you trying to tell me that the united states government when someone is

sitting in a cafe and having a cappuccino, the government can attack them. of course that's farfetched. that's not what they were saying. they were saying if this person poses an imminent threat was the united states have the right -- it's good that we are talking about it yes, i disagree with the way in which the subject was broached. i think the confirmation hearings for john brennan was the wrong forum to bring this up. but just the way in which he did it. and if you listen to his entire 13 hours, and there was so much [ inaudible ] in there, was again we have all of this hate and rhetoric and nonsense coming out of our congress while he is in the well and then when he got to the end and he said i

didn't break strom thurmond's record. is that what he was going for? we can agree to disagree it was just the wrong forum. >> bill: all right. let me say this. i think you have to seize the moment. i would have voted for john brennan. but john brennan is the one who expanded the use of drones to kills under president obama. he has expanded it tenfold over whatever george bush did. so that is the time to raise the issue, and i think these are legitimate issues about the power of the presidency. not the power of barack obama. and our constitution clearly puts limits on the power of the presidency, and when any president says i have unlimited power to use these killing machines anywhere in the world against anybody, i think a danger, with no due process, even against american citizens

facebook/billpressshow, bill i am from kentucky and if you can squeak out one good thing about rand paul you a good christian soul. >> bill: nice to be called a good christian this early in the morning. here is another republican i want to give some props to today, and that is senator charles grassley from iowa. yesterday the senate judiciary committee passed out a measure which would make straw purchases -- in other words you get somebody to buy a gun for somebody -- this is a classic way of getting guns in the hands of people who should not have them, it's a very important measure. it passed -- senator pat leahy's

bill and it passed 11-7 with one republican vote, senator charles grassley who has been a big supporter of the nra and a strong supporter of not only the second amendment but has opposed gun control measures in the past from the state of iowa, the state where people really -- you know respect and are proud of their gun ownership, but senator grassley standing up yesterday, and saying this is an important measure. he bucked his party, and you have to give him credit for doing that. i happened to have a chance to chat with the senator yesterday, and he was really disappointed that none of his fellow republicans would join him on this very important and kind of leadership position in terms of where we can go on gun safety. this bill will get to the president with the help of

senator grassley. jonathan easily covered that story yesterday for "the hill". hey john than. this was a big vote huh? >> yes, it was. it was a party line vote other than charles grassley. most of these bills will make it out of committee and see a vote on the senate floor, but it is definitely making a statement when someone as important as him crosses the lines and votes for it. >> bill: what was the execute that the other republicans gave for not voting for it? to me this is a no-brainer right? straw purchasers how could you support that? >> well, a few of the senators ted cruz and john coren said they would like to support the

bill when it goes to vote at the senate, but there are a few things they would like to see cleaned up. it was too sweeping. they were bringing outside in some cases a prison sentence on breaking this law is going to be 25 years, and that said that that's -- it could hurt some people that aren't really illegally trafficking, that are just engaged in some private sales and that kind of thing, so there are still going to be amemberments that are going to get add on and that might be pulled back a little bit but that was the main issue that some of these republican senator had. >> bill: do you know if lindsey graham was present and did he vote against it? >> graham i don't think was present yesterday. >> bill: back to the excuse for -- again, you know what it reminds me of -- and just flying back from las vegas the other

day, and i heard this announcement, it's like they tell you at the airport if anybody asks you to take a package on board for them duh, you don't do that or report it to an airport official right away. well, if somebody asks you to buy a gun for them, right? you ought to know right away there is something wrong with this transaction. >> sure. the main concern was that the penalty for selling the guns to the person that committed the crime would be harsher than the penalties that -- the person who actually committed the crime gets. so they are trying to iron that part out. but even if some of the amendments had that in place, it still would have seen some republican opposition just because it's a party thing at this point, and it's going to pass the committee anyway there's really no point in some of these republican lawmakers

sticking their neck out at this point. >> bill: well, give chuck grassley credit for sticking his neck out and standing up to his party, and again when you see something that makes sense he is willing to do that and it's too bad there are more members of his party as we told me yesterday that were not willing to stand up with him. hey, john, good work on "the hill." thank you so much for joining us. >> my pleasure. >> are you feeling okay this morning? something is off with you? i can't tell what is going on. political commentators. if only the president will sit down and talk to them. so what does he do? >> he had lunch yesterday, and then dinner with a whole bunch of republican senator, and now they are bitching that it took him too long. at the briefing yesterday, this is a question that the reporters in the front row wanted to know. well, wouldn't it have been better if he did this in november or december? why did he wait so long? and then there are those that are saying this is a total waste of time. the president shouldn't be doing this. it's not going to get him anything. and i was along with john fugelsang, great friend -- great talent who is the new host of "viewpoint" on current tv, and we talked about this last night. and his first question was last

week the president was blaming republicans for not compromising, and avoiding a sequester, and this week he is sitting down and having dinner with them. what happened? >> bill: you know my answer? welcome to washington, d.c. i love would love your take on whether or not you think the president ought to be exercising dining diplomacy, some people are calling it or his charm tour now. inviting these guys out for dinner and picking up the tab, whether he ought to be doing that, or whether it is waste of time. i happen to believe that the partisan side of me the yellow dog democrat in me says it is a waste of time to talk to any republican. but that's not the real world. okay? i would like to think that. it's not the real world. it's certainly not the way washington works or to be more

correct used to work. this town really hummed. this town got things done when people don't abandon their principals and their party, where people fight like hell during the day over the issues for things they really believe in, but at the same time at night they are being to kick back and enjoy a meal together and have a couple of drinks together and get to know each other's families, and that was certainly more true when people stayed -- congress was in session longer and stayed here for weekends and not just three days in the middle of the week, or two and a half days in the middle of the week but look at ronald reagan and tip o'neill. you saw that in the united states senate with leaders like tom daschle, and clint mitchell. because the fact is president

obama can rightfully i believe blame john boehner and mitch mcconnell for unwilling -- an unwillingness to compromise and avoid the sequester, but the same time the reality is to get anything done, whether it is the fiscal crisis or passing a budget or avoiding the debt ceiling or doing something on gun safety or immigration reform or climate control, the president needs republican votes. i think he is doing -- i the he is absolutely doing the right thing. i get nervous about it right? sometimes. but on this i really do trust the president. he is not going to give away the store on this. he is going to insist that whatever resolution comes out of it, has to be an balanced

approach, the simpson bowles approach. yes, spending cuts and yes, new revenue. and i think it's very significant by the way that dish told you i had a chance in las vegas to interview alan simpson earlier this week, and i asked him that direct question. can you resolve the long-term debt and deficit problem with spending cuts only? and he said no way. so the president is not going to abandon that. and here is what i think is more significant. it's not who was at the lunch or who was at the dinner, but who was not there. mitch mcconnell was not invited. there's a good reason why mitch mcconnell is not invited. john boehner and eric cantor weren't at the lunch yesterday. there is a good reason they were not there, because they have shown they are not willing to compromise. so the president, i think is looking for republicans who

are -- who know how serious our problems are and who really genuinely -- they may have some differences of opinion, but they genuinely want to fix it. and if he can pick them off and get some votes, then we can get something done. so dinner diplomacy i think the president is doing absolutely the right thing, and i hope it bares some fruit. but it's like we used to say in the cold war about the soviet union, better to be talking to them than lobbing missiles at each other. that is progress don't you think? 866-55-press, 866-557-7377 let's talk about it. >> announcer: heard around the country and seen on current tv. this is the "bill press show." ♪

what he should be concentrating on is 2014 and all of the rest of the democrats and the democratic voters because with the gerrymandering going on he could conceivably be the last democratic president we see. jesus christ himself could come down run for president and lose in 2016. >> bill: well first of all i think it's the republican party that is in trouble today, and has a slimmer chance of winning the white house again, not the democratic party number one. number 2, i get nervous when i % hear the president is negotiating with the republicans. bah he has disappointed us in the past. but i want to point out it's not the president. the president didn't cave on the debt ceiling. the republicans did.

the president didn't cave on shutting down the government the republicans did. and the president didn't cave on getting rid of any tax reform to avoid the sequester. but i think the president knows that he has got the wind at his back right now. there was an election on these very issues the romney way or the obama way and president obama won. he knows it. i think he knows he is dealing from strength. i think he is going to hold out against these republicans and he is going to try to persuade them that they are going to have to accept new revenues. there is no way around it. the president will not accept anything less than an balanced approach of cuts and spending so, again, i think it is a good thing and in this case i think we can trust him to do the right thing. >> announcer: this is the "bill press show." ♪

teamsters in all kinds of job sites these days. their website is teamster.org. yesterday the united nations slapping strong sanctions against north korea, on this issue and others we turn to our own foreign policy guru. hello, joe. >> good morning, bill. >> bill: let's hear susan rice just to begin with. >> we regret that north korea has again chosen the path of provocation instead of the path of peace. far from achieving -- it's a stated goal north korea has

again decided to further improve rich his people. >> bill: this was a pretty significant sanction. >> yes. it restricted yachts, and also suitcases full of cash and because they had the complete support of the entire security council, 15-0, including, most importantly china. >> bill: yeah, china has been the only one standing by north korea up to this point. >> china has opposed previous sanctions. and these are a little tougher. they didn't mind when north korea was poking a stick at the united states or keeping japan and south korea off balance but now this is getting serious.

now that they have made some leaps in missile technology they are starting to worry that north korea to disrupt the stability of one of the key areas of china. they certainly date of birth want a war on the korean mrens peninsula -- >> bill: this new leader of theirs seems to be crazy and unhinged. what kind of response could we expect from north korea. >> let me push back a little on that. kim young un28 years old, he has got to show his chops to the military, so he has tested a nuclear weapon, and a long-range missile, and now he makes these threats in the face of the un sanctions. from his point of view this is

good domestic politics. it's not that he has made a mistake, it's that the u.s. is going to attack north korea. that's what this is all about but don't worry, i your great leader will defend you. >> bill: it doesn't work well for the north korean people, right? >> right. we have videos of university students leaving the schools to do military drills. military pair -- parades, but he can't really as he claims bring a sea of fire to washington, d.c. that's what he claims, right? but he is testing out the new south korean president who takes office now and he is testing out trying to push the u.s. back.

>> bill: and the reason i ask is because i read somewhere this morning that there's a possibility they may abandon or break the truce that they have got with south korea they might move troops down there. they might provoke some clash with south korea. >> yeah, they have said this before. this is the 1953 ceasefire that ended the korean war. they have threatened to break it before. this looks a little bit more serious, so people are worried that they will do this and that they will do it by for example, moving troops across the border. south korea has promised to respond strongly if they do that and that's my real worry, that these kind of symbolic moves could become real military moves, and spiral out of control. that's the real threat.

>> bill: so there are no talks underway right now? >> no. >> bill: is there any possibility or likelihood of talks -- >> that's the big flaw in the u.s. policy here. the obama administration has ignored north korea for four years, and like glenn close in fatal attraction, north korea will not be ignored. the u.s. position has been almost like the bush administration, we're not going to reward bad behavior. but wait a minute you know, kennedy isn't say that when he talked to kruschev. you have to talk to your adversaries adversaries. so while you can't do that right now, after an accident interval, with chinese help we need to find an opportunity where not

just dennis rodman can meet with them, but the president can talk with him. >> you can't say we're not talking to them, we sent dennis rodman over there. >> that was an odd thing but sometimes things like that can break ground. kim young unsid -- un did say he wants to talk to president obama. >> bill: on another issue, senator rand paul who actually did a real filibuster, first one we have seen for three years. and raised the issue of drones and raising the questions of what policies do we have in place that guide the use of drones both overseas and here in

the united states. did he do the right thing? >> i didn't think he did. i was a little critical of him. grandstanding until i read your column. >> woe. >> i swear i got it in my inbox this morning and i read your column, and i thought you are right. this is a serious issue, i have to put aside my feeling about rand paul, and i think he did the right thing in two ways. this was a real filibuster. and two, this is a good point. i support this president. i think this is a national security president -- >> bill: me too. >> but i think the president is wrong on this. >> bill: and i think what the administration has to do is come up with some -- you know to me the technology has gotten ahead of the law here, and gotten ahead of the guidelines, and jay

carney told us yesterday, the president has said these are serious issues and serious questions. he welcomes these questions and we are going to come up with some guidelines within the next few months. meantime we have the drones to talk about. >> yeah, what have you been doing for the last four years. and there are two disturbing questions, and one is could you use a drone to kill an american citizen on american soil who is not a combatant, and why did it take all of this to get a clearance. >> bill: i know. >> isn't it obvious you can't do this? it wasn't obvious. >> bill: it wasn't obvious. and at the hearing eric holder did not answer it. >> the other issue can the u.s. conduct military operations on our territory in extreme emergency, and i think the answer to that is question and

i thought the most sens that rand paul made -- so the administration says we promise you we'll send you a memo and tell you what we're going to do. rand paul said no we should not be asking them for a memo. we should be sending them the memo. there is a basic question here. >> you know, obviously this has been a contested issue through much of u.s. history. >> bill: yeah. >> who gets to send the nation to war? the constitution is clear. it is congress. it is clear. >> bill: right.% >> executive branch has not always agreed to that. >> bill: and congress has ceded the issue.

>> right. >> bill: so after september 11th, congress gave the president blanket authority, basically to do anything anywhere in the war against terror that authorization is still existing, and the president cites that authorization for the use of drones. so it is time to re-examine min that authorization. >> i agree with you if rand paul is right it's time to take that down. to resend that authorization, especially as we're pulling out of afghanistan. >> bill: not that there are not still some people out there -- >> there are, but they don't need this brood sweeping type of authorization. >> bill: one quick point tom daschle said yesterday -- he was majority leader at that time that president bush wanted language for the authorization of force including inside the united states, and congress

would not put that in at the time. >> i talked to tom about this and he is right -- years back this came up again a few years ago, so this is one of the things that encourages me to agree with your point of view about the senator's actions here, and also looking over what patrick leahy did. he voted against the brennan confirmation. >> bill: i didn't realize that. we tweeted out an email about are there any limits on the use of drones. andy is calling from california with a comment. >> caller: i wish we would have used drones in iraq instead we got a bunch of lies about weapons of mass destruction and rand paul is a great showman but he never talks about how much

debt we incurred over these fake wars, and just blames the debt on obama. >> bill: i don't know where rand paul was on the iraq war. i know where his dad was, he was against them both. but i think andy makes a point that it's not that drones are all bad, and we should never use them, and both domestically like for air and sea searches whatever, some police activity, and certainly they are helpful in a military situation tracking down some of these people particularly up in the mountains of pakistan. >> united states does not conduct total war. we have rules of combat. there are things that our soldiers are allowed to do and not allowed to do, and the same should be with drones. because these drones are coming. there are more and more kinds of drones. larger drones, smaller drones

this is getting quite serious -- >> bill: and they are coming here. >> yeah. >> bill: or they are already here. >> yeah, pilots have already reported landing and seeing what they thought was a drone cross their landing lane. this is serious. the second is the bigger point your caller makes we're coming up on the tenth anniversary of an unnecessary war. the lives lost and trillions spent, completely unnecessary war. we shouldn't forget it. >> bill: absolutely. john kerry i think he is still off on his first mission -- >> i did an interview with martha raddatz yesterday, and she just came back from kuwait i think it is over. >> bill: how do you think he did? >> very well very well. >> bill: stepping into some big

high heels. >> yeah he didn't have the adoring mobs, but it was very business like. he knew almost everybody he was meeting. he had met them before. he conducted himself well. he didn't speak too much. and a lot of it but reassuring the allies. the allies are a nervous bunch, so whenever there is a change they want to know -- and that's what he is basically there to do. i'm representing obama's policy. this isn't kerry's policy and we're listening to you. >> bill: i thought it was a pretty impressive tour, and the lead talk of the town piece in the new yorker this week is about how fluent he is in french -- >> and german. >> bill: and german. >> this is the son of a foreign service officer. this guy knows the world.

with all of the attention to the mediterranean diet the hear of it is olive oil. >> right. right. >> bill: which i can't imagine cooking without. >> i agree. >> bill: but the question is how do you know the good stuff from the bad stuff. and you have brought us some samples. >> i wish you would smell the studio right now. it smells so nice. >> and that's one of the things you can tell. >> bill: when i go shopping for olive oil, you don't know what to buy, because the liabling is so confusing. >> right. here is the thing with olive oil, unfortunately close to 90% of what is in our -- i'm just

going to say big box stores is actually not what it says it is on the label. >> bill: how much? >> 90%. >> bill: woe. >> and there are a couple of watchdog groups that follow this stuff, and that's where the statistics come from. and here is the short version, extra virgin olive oil is really expensive to produce. that's the short story of why this happens. sometimes fraud happens because -- deliberately somebody is trying to expand their yield, and they adultrate an olive oil. sometimes it's innocence. there is a lot of innocent ignorance out there about olive

oil. there are a lot of distributors that don't know it's perishable or that there's a difference. >> bill: what does the phrase mean? extra virgin. >> when oil is extracted from the olive -- and the interesting thing to remember is that olive oil is just pure fruit juice. that's all it is. one of the requirements to be named extra virgin is that it never touches a chemical. it's one of the purest things we can put in our body. an olive oil that is going to be sold goes through laboratory testing, it testing for the percentage of free fatty acids the powerful poly-phe nols and

subjective test taste. once you have tasted a good fresh olive oil you'll know. >> i will never forget the first time i had really good olive oil. there's the stuff that you buy in the store, but when you taste really good olive oil, it is a amazing amazing. >> it really is. it is wonderful. >> bill: so you brought in several -- >> yes. >> bill: sip -- siprion will pick up the bottle. what do we have? >> i'll let your pallet tell you the good from the bad. the first one is a greek olive

oil. if you pick that up and first cup it in your has beens a little bit and smell it. and you can smell fruit. it smells fresh. it has an aroma and a color. the actual color of olive oil is irrelevant, but it should have color. whether it's yellow or green, it doesn't matter but it should have color. so then take a little olive oil in, and this is -- we southern girls hate to do this in public but you are going to slurp. >> okay. >> you bring air into your mouth -- >> you all right bill? >> bill: yeah i'm fine. that is so good. >> so your mouth is bursting with flavor. and you are probably feeling a bit of a peppery -- some might call it a burn but a peppery tingle on the back of your young

and throat that is polyphenols at work. >> it's amazing how fruity that is. >> isn't that great? and it doesn't leave your mouth feeling really oilily. >> bill: no but i never had olive oil as like a drink. >> right. right. >> bill: many of the mediterranean cultures will literally drink a shot of olive oil in the morning as a health practice. >> bill: really? >> just drink it down. >> bill: all right. >> now bill you just used the term pure olive oil. in the olive oil world, the term pure is not a good term. we like the wore because it's sort of virginal natural. what it means in the olive oil world is purified as in

deodorized stripped refined. and that's not good. so the next one has practically no color. if you try the aroma, it has very little aroma. >> bill: oh, yeah. uh-huh. >> did i give you the right one? very little aroma. >> bill: got it. uh-huh. >> yeah, and when you taste it i don't even think i have to tell you what to look for. you are going to notice the difference in mouth feel, the flavor -- >> yeah there's really no taste it to. >> very little taste, but kind of an oililiness. >> and you said about the last one that we tried, it didn't really leave your mouth feeling very greasy and my mouth feels coated in grease. >> bill: is this phony? >> it is not phony.

the bottle says pure olive oil. the marketing people who made this label know what your reaction to the word pure is going to be. >> bill: yeah. >> but it is exactly what it says it is. it is probably third pressed oil, which is not edible, therefore it has to be refined and stripped. is it phony? probably not if you know what you are looking for. is it good for you? no. >> bill: so there are olives in there somewhere, right. so if it says pure, be ware right? >> move on down the aisle. >> that's really stunning after having the good stuff. >> yes. on the side of the label it will say something -- extra virgin olive oil, and on the side it will say this is made from olives from any or all of the following countries, and it will

list about six countries, and my feeling is, if you don't know, i don't want to buy it. >> bill: yeah. >> that's a blend of more than likely inferior oils. >> bill: is the best olive oil from greece or italy? >> yeah, is there one particular region -- >> no a greek person will say the best is from greece and an italian will say the best is from italy. the answer is no the best olive oil is one that is grown in ideal climate, milled properly and sold fresh. so many -- and there -- they are good in the mediterranean and california because that's the right soil for olives. but there is a farmer in georgia that is growing a really fine

product. >> bill: okay. >> the next one i have for you is a lemon fused olive oil. and i didn't say infused. lemon rinds were actually crushed with the oil. so it's a natural marriage of two fresh oils and it's beautiful. it's the same greek olive oil that you tasted first but this one was crushed with lemon rind. >> bill: my favorite olive oil is the meyer lemon olive oil -- >> yes. this is the greek lemon. a little sweeter than california lemons. >> bill: oh my. >> isn't that wonderful. this is real lemon oil. >> oh, man. >> isn't that nice? >> would it be a good idea or bad idea to actually take a bath in this stuff?

>> oh for sure. >> bill: i like the tingle in your throat. >> yes and you want -- this is what i tell people. that is an indication of freshness. if you don't feel that it is probably not fresh. and that's the trick with olive oil that is difficult, olive oil is good for two years from the time it was picked off of the tree assuming it has been kept in good conditions during that period. >> bill: i wanted to mention that carry's store is ah-love oil. >> get it. >> bill: i get it. and ah-love oil and vinegar dot-com you can check it out and order some of these online. >> yes, you can. >> can you cook with this olive oil? >> that is a myth about olive oil. olive oil has a burn point of

around 400 degrees. the greeks fry with olive oil all the time. you don't want to let any oil smoke because the smoke is toxic. but there is no reason not to fry with olive oil. i poach fish in olive oil which makes it like silk or butter. >> bill: and you are certainly saute. >> sure. saute, roast -- >> but are there olive oils that you don't want to cook with because it's a higher quality -- >> it is really a budget issue. so if you have the means to saute with a $50 olive oil, go for it. [ laughter ] >> all right. >> but if you don't, then what you want to do -- i'll tell you in europe they sell -- you are go on the shelf and there is

236,000 for the month of february, and unemployment dropping dropping from 7.9% to 7.7%.% mj lee covers jobs and the economy for "politico," joining us this morning. mj this will certainly bring some smiles around the white house and country, right? >> i think so. economists were predicting the economy would have add as many ooze 190,000 jobs and most people predicted that the unemployment rate would probably dip to 7.8 to 7.9% in january. so the rate to have jobbed is better than what most economists had been expecting. >> bill: yeah and usually it is

the other way around right? with so many they predict 20 or 150, and it ends up less than that. >> yeah. and obviously the report just came out. but it looks like we saw jobs gains in business services sector, construction retail trade. there were losses in the government sector mostly at the state level down from 10,000 jobs, though. >> your colleague just tweeted ut couple of funny things. he said first of all this is an obama in the rose garden report. that's how big of a jump it is. >> bill: meaning we might see him in the rose garden talking about this report. and the clacking noise you hear is the sound of gop reports

being moved to the trash can. >> it makes it an interesting dynamic with all of the sequester news we have going on. the stock market really rallied this week, and that is an indication that it might get a little more complicated. the white house has been adamant that the sequester would very seriously hurt the economy, and now that argument sort of looses its strength. >> bill: yeah. i want to ask you about the month of february because it seems to me -- boy i'm far from an expert in this field but when you expect the job numbers to go up is in the summer when you have more construction projects and warmer weather, and don't we expect them to be flat or even go down in the winter months. >> yeah, i think the worry is that this is not going to keep

up as we go into the spring and summer, and today's jobs report technically had nothing to do with the sequester either. today's job report is from just february, so if you are drawing a firm line here you would argue the billion dollarses of dollars in spending cuts was not reflected. that is not to say that employers didn't presumptively act. so i think that will all take a little bit more time to play out in the coming months. >> bill: yeah, and we do know the congressional budget office has predicted a loss of 750,000 jobs that is over and above whatever government job furloughs that we might be experiencing as a result of this. so, again, we're talking with mj lee from "politico" about the latest job numbers. 236,000 new jobs in the month of

february, the unemployment drops from 7.9% to 7.7%. so overall, mj this -- does this -- where does -- well let me ask you this first of all. do you remember how many months in a row now -- 24, 25 months in a row there has been positive job growth? >> yeah, something like that. it was at the end of the presidential campaign that we saw the unemployment rate develop below the 8% level and now it looks like the rate is going down. i covered the hearing on capitol hill last week and ben

bernierky predicted we would let the job rate drop down until 2016. keeping inning mind sort of the long-term view, this has been a slow-moving recovery to say the least. >> bill: whether it's 24, 25, 26, whatever it is does this tell us the economic recovery is still headed in the right direction and the possibility of a double dip recession is just not going to happen? >> again, i hate to keep talking about the sequester, but we can't ignore it at this point -- >> bill: it's the elephant in the room. >> yeah, and you mentioned that the spending cuts are going to cost something like [ inaudible ] jobs if the sequester stays in place, and the really difficult thing about

trying to connect the dots is that no one really knows exactly how these effects are going to be felt and when. so if the projected job loss is 750,000, will most of those come in the first couple of months or spread out over the year or will we not see the job cuts come until much much later. >> bill: yeah, it's good news knot just for the president, good news for the country, and let's hope it holds up, and maybe -- maybe we can resolve the sequester, so the sequester never really does kick in. mj, thanks for joining us this morning. >> great to talk to you. >> stephanie: politico.com is where you'll fine her. this is a big deal. >> it's a bfd. >> bill: yeah. >> i don't remember seeing one

recent they has been this big. the last time we saw the unemployment rate this low was december in 2008. >> bill: and the last time -- i don't know what you are looking at -- shows 236,000 the ones we have reported. and stan calendar has been in the studio, and others have been in the studio when these numbers come out, we have always talked in the 110,000, 120,000 range. and economists have said that's good, but it's not enough. well, here we are at 236,000. it is interesting. glen thrush may be righted. jay carney has a briefing called for 12:30. i wouldn't be surprised if he is preempted. >> it will be a nice day out,

some limits to filibustering, and i'm going to have to take care of one of those here in a few minutes. [ laughter ] >> bill: you need a strong principal hah strong bladder to filibuster. but he taught us this is what a filibuster should be. if you don't have strong enough principals or bladder to filibuster, then don't get up and filibuster. don't say i'm going to filibuster this, and then nothing happens. >> right. >> bill: it's a fake filibuster. he did the real thing, so good for him. >> yeah. good for rand paul. >> bill: and i know a lot of you are upset because i said a good thing about a republican but just to make you further upset i want to say another good thing about another republican.

senator charles grassley this bill on gun safety bans so-called straw-purchases, makes them a felony. that's when somebody buys a gun for somebody else to avoid having to go through a background check. i have a criminal record i can't buy that ar15. so i get peter ogburn to guy it for me and no background check. they are called straw purchases. the bill passed out of the senate judiciary committee yesterday 11-7, and center grassley from iowa who has always been a big backer with the nra, he voted for this bill and he is the only republican to do so, so good for him. and i had a chance to chat with

him yesterday, he said he voted for it because it was the right thing to do, and he was really pissed that some of his fellow republicans wouldn't also vote for it. this is a no-brainer. why should anyone be able to buy a gun for somebody who should haven't a gun. this is a way of keeping guns out of the hands of people that shouldn't have them. >> what is the down side to something like this? >> bill: the down side is obama is for it. >> there you go. >> bill: therefore they have to be against it. and having said good things about two republicans -- that's my limit. that's my limit. rand paul, and chuck grassley. how about bill clinton, he steps up to the plate today on the op-ed page of the "washington post." good for him. this is the president who sadly gave us don't ask don't tell in the military this is a president who sadly gave us the defense of marriage act which

makes same-sex marriage illegal at the federal level it is up now in front of the supreme court, the constitutionality of that law is being tested. and president clinton who signed that bill into law back in 1996 writes an op-ed in the "washington post" said saying it is time to overturn doma basically he says he made a big mistake. he should not have signed that legislation. he said he thought that it might end discrimination. in fact he has -- he now realizes the law itself is discriminatory, and it should be overturned. he said it is incompatible with our constitution. >> the tide is turning day by day. >> bill: absolutely. so now the author, if you will -- father of doma says it is unconstitutional. we ought to get rid of it.
